5 ways to start your day more mindfully

The key to a productive, successful day really lies in the way that you start it. Over the years, I have experimented with different ways of starting my morning (from trying the "sleep-in" to getting up at 4:30am to work out), and I have finally figured it out, so I wanted to share with you the five things that I (try to) do each morning and help me feel energized, positive and ready for the day's demands.

1. Get up early.

I'm not talking 4:30am (unless you're into that sort of thing), but giving ourselves a few minutes to set up for the day is crucial to getting started in the right headspace. I personally like at least 1 hour from when I get out of bed to when I have to leave the house. I don't have a routine set in stone but I do not like being rushed, so ensuring I have some time to dawdle, sip coffee while I browse Instagram, pack my lunch etc...is a surefire way to start stress-free.


2. Stretch.

Do this first thing when you wake up, as you brush your teeth, while you wait for the kettle to boil, whenever. You could even do 10 squats or jumping jacks, whatever gets your body and the blood moving after being still all night. You'll immediately feel more energized.


3. Drink water.

I try to drink at least 1/2 litre of water before I have any coffee and before I leave the house - this keeps your body hydrated and boosts your organs so that they can perform optimally throughout the day.


4. Take a minute to be phone and distraction free.

I find this really grounds me and helps me start my day calmly so that I can really take in the what is going on around me. I typically do this on my 6 minute walk to the Skytrain in the morning - I like to take at least 5 deep breaths and literally just look around and appreciate what is around me (houses, people, green grass, a hospital)


5. Have a healthy breakfast.
Take it from a girl who used to think coffee was a food group. A healthy breakfast is one of my favourite ways to start the morning - especially on weekends when I miss out on any of the others listed above. I like a lighter breakfast because I'm more of a lunch/dinner gal, so opt for a simple berry smoothie with spinach and vegan protein powder (I'll share the recipe in another post). It's filling but not heavy, which I love.


These simple add-ins to your morning routine are a great way to ensure your day is off to a good start. Try them all, try one, mix and match...whatever resonates with you and feels good to try, do that. Add one in tomorrow and see how you feel.
